Salary: £38,674 to £46,913 per annum : Grade 7 (including Oxford University Weighting)
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the research group of Professor Jens Rittscher at the Department of Engineering Science, Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Headington. The post is funded by the BRC4 Imaging Theme and is fixed-term until 31 March 2026, with the possibility of an extension.

Endoscopy plays a vital role in the detection of gastrointestinal cancers and in the surveillance of premalignant conditions. Clinicians assess the mucosal microstructure to observe any dysplastic changes that are early indicators of progression to malignancy. In collaboration with the Translational Gastroenterology Unit (TGU) and the Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research (LICR) we aim to develop a computer guided endoscopy image recognition system that will support endoscopists through a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the mucosal microstructure.

You will be responsible for the algorithm development and implementation of the overall system. It is expected that your work will contribute towards advancing the state of the art in computer guided endoscopy.

You should hold a relevant PhD/DPhil or be close to completion, with relevant experience in the field.  Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and/or C/C++ is essential, along with strong communication skills. These should include the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and findings, and represent the research group at meetings. Prior experience in biomedical imaging would also be advantageous.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Jens Rittscher (jens.rittscher@eng.ox.ac.uk).

For more information about working at the Department, see  www.eng.ox.ac.uk/about/work-with-us/.

Only online applications received before midday on 28 April 2025 can be considered. You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, including a brief statement of research interests (describing how past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position), CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.

The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
