We are the University of Cumbria, for and from Cumbria and our localities, rooted in serving our communities, with people, place and partnership at our heart.
Now is a very exciting time to be joining us because we are reviewing our "Towards 2030" strategic plan focused on making the most of our three most valuable assets: People, Place, and Partnerships, to be a catalyst for economic well-being for our region, nationally and internationally.
The University has invested in a new Institute of Engineering, Computing and Advanced Manufacturing (IoECAM) in partnership with BAE Systems. Based in Barrow-in-Furness, this development is seen as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform participation and access to education in a location with major industrial national importance.
This is an exciting opportunity to take a key role in the creation of this new academic area. We are seeking creative individuals to contribute to this development, balancing excellence in teaching, employer collaboration and research innovation. We are recruiting one Senior Lecturer and one Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering to work alongside the Dean of IoECAM.
You will contribute to the development of a vibrant academic community by delivering high-quality learning. A strong knowledge of Mechanical Engineering is essential. You will have (or be committed to obtaining) a relevant HE teaching qualification and may hold a PhD in a related subject. The ability to inspire and engage students from diverse backgrounds is crucial, alongside a commitment to raising aspirations and educational opportunities.
We seek motivated self-starters with a track record of delivering high-quality academic provision in response to employer demand. You will help shape and develop the University’s STEM portfolio, ensuring our courses are evidence-informed, industry-relevant and innovative, while contributing to widening participation and delivering an excellent student experience.
Your initial focus will be on developing the academic offering, rolling out a new BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering in Barrow-in-Furness from 2025 and engaging with employers to shape undergraduate, postgraduate, apprenticeship and CPD programmes.
You will be supported to engage in subject-specific, professional and pedagogy research to enhance teaching and expand knowledge. Opportunities will also be available to engage in external activities, including academic enterprise initiatives.
Informal Enquiries: Dr Kate Dixon | Deputy Director, IoECAM | kate.dixon@cumbria.ac.uk
We seek innovative, creative, high-quality researchers and scholars to foster a culture of exploration, discovery and intellectual challenge that generates international recognition, respect and engagement.
In return, the University offers an attractive benefits package, including 35 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, 25 research and scholarly activity days, professional development support and mentor provision in the first year. The post is permanent and full-time but may be taken on a part-time or job-share basis. You will be campus-based in Barrow-in-Furness, with some hybrid working opportunities dictated by business needs.
