We are searching for a self-motivated researcher to work part-time on the development of new speciality optical fibre.
This research is part of a substantial £2.2M research grant funded by EPSRC, with a primary objective to create tailored optical fibre specifically for condition monitoring applications.
Successful candidates will engage in internationally recognized multidisciplinary research within the Mechanical Engineering department at the University of Southampton, collaborating closely with the Optoelectronics Research Centre. The project involves the innovation of new optical fibre, specifically designed for monitoring high-value composite materials, including Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP).
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
A strong engineering background (applied physics, mechanical engineering, materials engineering).
Experience in CO₂ laser processing, including glass 3D printing.
Experience with laser-based optical fibre drawing.
Experience in design, to tackle the manufacturing needs associated with speciality optical fibre development and integration, including CAD, CAM, control systems, and FEA.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate:
Willingness and ability to contribute to the supervision of postgraduate students.
Excellent communication and organizational skills, along with a proven track record in journal publications and conference presentations.
Join us in this exciting venture, where your expertise will contribute to advancing the field of optical fibre technology and its applications in condition monitoring.
