About The Role

This is a Fixed Term post for 2 years working full-time.

You are invited to apply for one of our innovative surgical research posts within Swansea University Medical School. These post provide an opportunity for the successful candidate(s) to combine high impact academic surgical research with a broad range of clinical exposure. The areas of research would be suited to surgical trainees with either colorectal, plastic surgery, urology, ENT or hepatobiliary interests. Candidates will be closely supervised by academic surgeons and university collaborators within that discipline who have proven track records of success in supervising higher degree awards. Successful candidates will be expected to work towards a higher degree (MSc, MPhil, MD or PhD). There are a range of funded research projects available with a choice of setting (either laboratory based or with a more clinical focus) depending on the ability and preferences of the successful candidate.

This position will be based at Singleton Hospital, Swansea and Swansea University.

Swansea University Medical School has three main activities: learning and teaching, research, and business and innovation. From the creation of the Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programme in 2004, opening of the Institute of Life Science phase one (ILS1) in 2007 and phase two (ILS2) and the Centre for NanoHealth in 2011, to earning the right to award Primary Medical Qualifications (PMQ) independent of any other institution in 2014; the Medical School is now acknowledged as one of the fastest growing medical schools in the UK and is in the top 10 rankings of medical schools in the UK.

Welsh Language Skills

The Welsh language level required for this role is Level 1 - A little. The role holder will be able to pronounce Welsh words, answer the phone in Welsh (good morning/afternoon) and use very basic everyday words and phrases (thank you, please etc.). Level 1 can be reached by completing a 1 hour course.

Additional Information

Applications for this role will take the format of a CV submission and cover letter.

You will have attained MRCS (or equivalent) and successfully completed the Royal College of Surgeons Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) course or equivalent. You will be able to evidence implementing and innovative practice including evaluation and positive outcome based on current research and knowledge in the field. You should also be able to evidence advanced professional, research or teaching practice demonstrating at least two related CPD activities in the last year.
