Postdoctoral Researcher in Property Flood Resilience

The world-renowned Energy and Environment Institute (EEI) at the University of Hull conducts research to better understand flood processes and adapt to the consequences of flooding.

Property-level Flood Resilience measures (PFR), such as flood resistant doors, help mitigate risks from flooding for homes and businesses. However, little research has been directed to innovation in this area. Together with leading insurer, RSA, part of the Intact Financial Corporation, we are working to improve the evaluation, effectiveness and application of PFR measures, and are now seeking a suitably qualified postdoctoral researcher with a desire to make a difference in the real world.

The successful candidate will establish and deliver an active programme of research and knowledge exchange to develop and optimize new testing regimes for flood resilience products, enable PFR needs to be aligned with exposure to flood risk and formulate an evidence-based PFR performance rating system.

With knowledge and understanding of hydraulics and/or hydrology, you will have expertise in experiments, fieldwork or numerical modelling and/or developing successful systems for testing devices/products. You will possess the skills required to analyse, interpret and apply information from large data sets and knowledge of geospatial datasets and experience of GIS-based analysis is also desirable. Working as part of a team, you will be able to liaise effectively with external partners and engage with policy makers and/or external stakeholders.

The post offers excellent career development opportunities including managing packages of work, speaking/presenting at academic or industry conferences and leading and co-authoring publications.

Duration: 12 months

To discuss the role informally, please contact Prof Stuart J McLelland, S.J.McLelland@hull.ac.uk or Dr Robert Thomas, R.E.Thomas@hull.ac.uk.

We will consider job share and flexible working arrangements.

We strongly encourage applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnicity, women, LGBT+, and disabled candidates, and candidates from lower socio-economic groups and care-experienced backgrounds.

As part of the University’s Agile Working Guidance flexibility around normal hours, times and location (including home working) may be available through discussion with your Line Manager. We are also happy to discuss flexible working.
