Contract type: Fixed term part-time (50%) for 9 months (April 2025 – December 2025)
Purpose of the Post
Imperial College London is the only UK university to focus entirely on science, engineering, medicine and business.
The teaching fellow will take the lead, under Prof. Bruno Clerckx supervision, in revising the third year undergraduate module in digital communications for EEE students, generating new material for lectures, classes and coursework, delivering teaching, training GTAs, and conducting assessments.
Key Responsibilities
Contribution to the College's Educational Mission
- Role priority: Review/generate new material for lectures, classes and coursework, revising the 3rd year UG module in digital communications.
- Teaching: including lectures and academic tutorials, using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods
- Course administration: organise teaching activities, coordinate internal/visiting lecturers, attendance records, Health & Safety matters, etc
- Assess the work (including examinations and coursework) and progress of students using appropriate methods and criteria. Provide constructive feedback on essays and course assessments
- Act as a personal tutor, supporting students with academic, personal and professional development and with pastoral matters
Educational Research, Evaluation and Critical Enquiry
- Participate in the activities of evaluation and critical enquiry, contributing to educational research
Leadership and Management
- Train Graduate Teaching Assistants
Profession and Practice
- Willingness to work towards appropriate professional recognition/accreditation e.g. Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
- Be reflective/responsive and commit to personal and professional development, and development of own teaching/learning skills
- Undertake internal learning and development training
Person Specification
Candidates/post holders will be expected to demonstrate the following: Essential (E)/ Desirable (D)
Education
- Degree/equivalent qualification in a related discipline/be nearing the completion of a postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in the general area of communication systems and signal processing for communications - (E)
- Capacity to work towards appropriate teaching qualification - (D)
Experience
- Background in digital communications and signal processing preferred - (E)
- Some previous experience involvement in communication systems teaching activities/associated administrative work - (E)
- A track record of teaching experience in higher education at the highest standards - (E)
Knowledge
- Develop familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess - (E)
- Demonstrable familiarity with a variety of student-centred strategies to promote and assess teaching and to provide constructive feedback - (D)
- A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and LaTeX - (E)
- A good command of the core UG/PG syllabus in digital communications and signal processing for communications - (E)
Skills & Abilities
- Recent experience and proven competence of teaching or tutoring at a UG/PG level, and be able to demonstrate the ability to teach communication systems effectively at UG/PG level - (E)
- Work flexibly and as part of a team in an open-minded and cooperative manner - (E)
- Demonstrable ability to take initiative, prioritise efficiently and work autonomously - (E)
