Who we are.
Located close to the capital, St. Helier, the Institute of Law is a registered charity, incorporated by the Royal Court of Jersey in 2008, to provide the highest standard of legal training in the Channel Islands, to nurture its rich legal heritage, and offer a focus for academic study and professional education in Jersey and Guernsey law.
The Institute of Law offers a variety of innovative and internationally recognised programmes that support legal professionals at every stage of their career.
About the role.
We now seek a Dean & Chief Executive to lead and develop this respected and specialist academic institution, holding overall strategic responsibility for all aspects of the Institute’s activities. This includes ensuring sound governance, financial stability, and the delivery of high-quality programmes. In collaboration with the Board of Governors, you will drive the development of the Institute’s new strategic plan, ensuring all academic and wider activities align with its mission, values and ambitions.
Guiding a dedicated team, the Dean & Chief Executive will also oversee academic and central functions such as Admissions, Timetabling, Student Registry, HR, and Marketing, as well as the entire student journey, from pre-application to alumni relations. With support from the Associate Deans, they will ensure the quality, standards, and development of the academic curriculum while enhancing student experience and outcomes. Additionally, they will manage academic staff engagement, fostering a collaborative environment that benefits all students.
Who we are looking for.
The post-holder will need to possess excellent academic credentials gained through current higher education leadership experience, related to law. Candidates will be a confident communicator, capable of effectively networking with diverse stakeholders and promoting the Institute’s culture, educational values and vision. Through collaborative leadership, they will engage with academic and support staff and have an open and visible management approach.
Direct experience of improving the student experience and developing student recruitment pathways is essential. Current knowledge of degree-level teaching, assessment, and curriculum development is also important. Alongside an excellent academic profile and proven strategic and operational leadership capabilities, potential candidates will have an entrepreneurial approach to strategic growth.
The new Dean & Chief Executive will play a pivotal role in driving the Institute’s ambitions to expand its academic offering in Jersey.
