The Theory Supervisions Lead is a new post, which is being set up to improve the transition for medical students between the pre-clinical and clinical courses (years three and four), a problem identified at multiple recent student surveys. The postholder will set up and manage a system of theory supervisions for year four students, to complement the successful clinical supervisions which are delivered to students in all three clinical years.
Students will receive 20 theory supervisions throughout year 4, in small groups, by videoconference. Each supervision will focus on one of the main 'patient presentations' on the GMC curriculum (e.g. shortness of breath). As well as providing interactive teaching on that clinical presentation, the supervisions will support students in developing skills in self-directed learning, so they are equipped to learn about topics not delivered in the supervisions.
The postholder will lead the development of brief session outlines, supervisor recruitment, management and quality assurance of the programme. They will be supported by the Clinical Sub-Dean for Staff Development, the Associate Professor of Medical Education Practice (who also leads the clinical supervisor programme) and have links with the Head of Undergraduate GP Teaching and the GP Education Group. They will have the support of an administrator, with specific job plan time allocated for this work.
The role is based in the Education Division Offices of the Clinical School. The weekly time commitment is one half day per week (0.1 FTE / 1 PA). This will be paid at the appropriate rate with respect to seniority and the postholder will have a fractional contract with the university. The candidate should be working as a fully-trained GP within the Eastern region. All candidates for the post should hold full GMC registration and a license to practice. This is a three-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal for a further three years thereafter.
All candidates for the post should hold full GMC registration and a license to practice.
The postholder will report to Clinical Sub-Dean for Staff Development, currently Dr Jeremy Webb (who is also a GP in Suffolk). For further information, interested candidates should contact Dr Webb on jw349@medschl.cam.ac.uk.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
