Role Description
Department
The University of York’s Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) wish to recruit a Research Associate to measure reactive chlorine gases in the marine boundary layer and to lead data analyses and publication. You will measure reactive chlorine gases at the Cape Verde Observatory using a ToFWerk Vocus chemical ionisation mass spectrometer (CIMS) and HCl using Tunable Infrared Laser Direct Absorption Spectroscopy (TILDAS, Aerodyne Research Inc.) during two field campaigns in 2025/2026. These measurements will be used to evaluate knowledge of halogen sources and chemistry, including a new proposed photocatalytic mechanism for chlorine release. The post is available from 1 June 2025 for a period of up to 12 months.
WACL is the largest dedicated atmospheric chemistry facility in the UK, home to more than 70 researchers. WACL supports an exceptional research environment, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities and a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise. The Department of Chemistry, within which WACL sits, strives to provide a working environment which allows all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish, and to excel.
Role
You will deploy the Vocus CIMS and HCl-TILDAS at Cape Verde for a minimum of 2 months to measure chlorine gases during two field campaigns. The post will also entail some development of calibration methodologies. You will utilise the measurements to evaluate knowledge of chlorine sources and chemistry in the marine boundary layer, using a box-model for data interpretation and working with global modellers for wider data interpretation.
