University of York - Department of Chemistry

Location: Cape Verde - Cabo Verde, York
Salary: £37,174 to £45,413 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 7th March 2025
Closes: 24th March 2025
Job Ref: 13953

Role Description

Department

The University of York’s Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) wish to recruit a Research Associate to measure reactive chlorine gases in the marine boundary layer and to lead data analyses and publication. You will measure reactive chlorine gases at the Cape Verde Observatory using a ToFWerk Vocus chemical ionisation mass spectrometer (CIMS) and HCl using Tunable Infrared Laser Direct Absorption Spectroscopy (TILDAS, Aerodyne Research Inc.) during two field campaigns in 2025/2026. These measurements will be used to evaluate knowledge of halogen sources and chemistry, including a new proposed photocatalytic mechanism for chlorine release. The post is available from 1 June 2025 for a period of up to 12 months.

WACL is the largest dedicated atmospheric chemistry facility in the UK, home to more than 70 researchers. WACL supports an exceptional research environment, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities and a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise. The Department of Chemistry, within which WACL sits, strives to provide a working environment which allows all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish, and to excel.

Role

You will deploy the Vocus CIMS and HCl-TILDAS at Cape Verde for a minimum of 2 months to measure chlorine gases during two field campaigns. The post will also entail some development of calibration methodologies. You will utilise the measurements to evaluate knowledge of chlorine sources and chemistry in the marine boundary layer, using a box-model for data interpretation and working with global modellers for wider data interpretation.

The specific

  • Run the HCl-TILDAS and iodide and bromide-ToF-MS during two field campaigns at the Cape Verde Observatory, likely Oct/Nov 2025 and Jan/Feb 2026.
  • Analyse the data, lead publications on production mechanisms and atmospheric impacts of chlorine, and contribute to the synthesis of the overall project results
  • Conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research.
  • Assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • A first degree in chemistry, physics or environmental/natural science and a PhD in atmospheric chemistry
  • Previous experience in researching atmospheric chemistry and making atmospheric measurements
  • Previous experience of optical and / or mass spectrometry based analytical techniques
  • Well-developed analytical skills, attention to detail and commitment to high-quality measurements
  • Knowledge and experience of data analyses and/or modelling
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to write-up research work for publications and to present to conferences
  • Ability and experience to develop research objectives and carry out individual and collaborative projects, planning and prioritising own work in order to meet deadlines
  • Ability to design and conduct complex experiments
  • Highly motivated and professional work ethic, with commitment to high quality research, a collaborative ethos and a willingness to proactively support colleagues and students
  • Ability to work closely with others within a team environment and independently using own initiative
