Lecturer/Course Leader In Business

Reporting to: Academic Manager

Location: Gants Hill Campus

Position: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week                                                                                           

Purpose of the job:

The primary aim of this post is to ensure effective academic leadership and administration of the BA (Hons) Business (top-up) and FdA Business programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Address issues related to course delivery quality, student satisfaction, progress, and retention as they arise.
  • Provide academic leadership to implement the policies, practices, and processes of the college.
  • Liaise with the course team and wider college staff to ensure students receive high-quality academic support and experience.
  • Deliver a minimum of 12 hours of teaching per week is required.

Course Management and Administration

  • Ensure that the Course and Module Specifications, Assessments, Study Guides, and Feedback plans are current, relevant, and available to students.
  • Ensure that marking, moderation, and feedback are completed promptly and ensure that processes are concucted ethically, accurately, and to a high standard.
  • Discuss and agree on the resource requirements for the course, including room allocations, equipment, and technology needs. Make sure that academic texts and resources are available to deliver the course within the agreed-upon resourcing parameters.
  • Ensure that both lecturers and students have attended induction to be aware of college facilities, including health and safety and student support facilities, i.e., welfare.
  • Assist College administration in maintaining accurate student records.

Academic Leadership:

  • Together with colleagues, investigate any matters arising through module leaders and/or students. Advise as appropriate or escalate to the Academic Manager or other College staff.
  • Support the Academic Manager in complying with college and statutory requirements as directed by the awarding bodies/statutory requirements.

Quality assurance and enhancement:

  • Collaborate with team members to plan and create annual assessments and provide feedback for the course.
  • Ensure that all assessments, including marking and moderation, conform to college and partner quality standards by working with team members.
  • Discuss coursework deadline extensions and manage late or missing assessments with colleagues, agreeing on appropriate actions.
  • Work alongside Module Leaders to coordinate the marking of students' assessments, conduct internal moderation, and correlate results.
  • Attend the Board of Examiners and other Course Committees, making recommendations and taking actions on behalf of the Course team.
  • Organize and administer Peer Observations and Teacher Observations in accordance with college requirements.
  • Organize and lead course team meetings to review ongoing work, identify any issues and students at risk, and arrange for follow-up actions.

Student Support:

  • Support students in obtaining academic assistance for specific issues and direct those with special needs to the College Welfare Team when necessary.
  • Refer pastoral care concerns to student support services or other specialized resources available within the College.
  • Ensure that support is provided for students identified as “at risk” due to a lack of academic progress or attendance, or both, as appropriate.
  • Make sure that students and colleagues are aware of the procedures for Extenuating Circumstances, Academic Appeals, and Academic Misconduct.
  • Assist in managing Academic Appeals and as indicated in College Policy, following the guidance of the Academic Manager.

Other responsibilities:

  • Support the College marketing and recruitment initiatives as and when requested.

 

Person Specification and Key Skills (E - essential, D - desirable):

  • Educated to a Master’s degree level (E)
  • Knowledge and experience of regulatory frameworks in Higher Education (E)
  • Holder of a teaching qualification (E)
  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (D)
  • Experience in developing good working relationships with colleagues (E)
  • Ability to write and present high-quality reports and documents (E)
  • Effective organisational and planning skills (E)
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision (E)
  • Ability to prioritise workloads and to provide a high level of professional judgement, confidentiality, cultural awareness and sensitivity when liaising with staff, students and other key stakeholders (E).
