The role:

Are you an experienced Technician looking for an exciting opportunity to shape the future of hands-on engineering education? TEDI-London is seeking a dedicated and innovative professional to join our academic team, supporting the delivery of our dynamic undergraduate programmes through a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) methodology.

In this role, you will play a key part in facilitating real-world engineering projects in collaboration with industry partners. Many of these projects take place in our Makerspaces, where students engage in practical, collaborative group work. Your expertise will be essential in providing top-tier technical support, instruction, and hands-on guidance to enhance student learning.

As a confident and knowledgeable professional, you will advise on techniques, equipment usage, and troubleshooting, offering both one-to-one support and group demonstrations. You will also contribute to induction activities, ensuring students develop the practical skills they need to thrive.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Manage and maintain Makerspaces and equipment, ensuring the availability of consumables and coordinating with technical and academic teams for procurement, delivery, and installation of new equipment.
  • Collaborate with academic colleagues to design and deliver technical course elements, including preparing learning materials and contributing to curriculum planning.
  • Lead and support practical teaching sessions, both independently and collaboratively, instructing students in the use of materials, tools, and machinery.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance, advice, and formative assessments, ensuring students develop the required competencies aligned with learning outcomes.
  • Support student projects and provide expertise on materials, techniques, procedures, and equipment.
  • Oversee the maintenance, repair, and procurement of equipment, liaising with manufacturers and suppliers as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, wellbeing, and security protocols, escalating key issues where necessary.
  • Offer pastoral support to students, signposting relevant services and following appropriate escalation processes.
  • Contribute to open days, exhibitions, events, and field trips, actively supporting the wider academic team in achieving objectives and deadlines.

Skills and Knowledge:

Essential:

  • Experience of machine workshop equipment (lathe, milling machine, CNC mill, 5 axis CNC, laser cutter, 3d printers, universal testing machine) and relevant CAD software.
  • Experience in supporting engineering laboratories, Makerspaces or workshop spaces, with a strong understanding of relevant Health and Safety legislation and its application to a student laboratory context.
  • Background in teaching, or a customer facing environment, with the ability to engage and support students effectively.
  • Strong problem solving and technical skills, with the ability to work under pressure while providing constructive support to students and staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration and relationship-building at all levels
  • Ability to deliver practical demonstrations, presentations and one-on-one mentoring to develop staff and students’ technical skills within the makerspaces.
  • Commitment to staying up-to-date with advancements in engineering and evolving safety regulations relevant to the role.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach, with a willingness to take on tasks beyond core responsibilities – crucial in a dynamic start-up environment.
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a fast-paced, innovative setting,

Desirable:

  • Experience with continuous improvement tools, such as 5S, to enhance efficiency and organisation.
  • Effective facilitation and training delivery skills, with the ability to engage diverse in both face-to-face and online settings.
  • Proven ability to lead, manage, and successful deliver project outcomes while effectively organising and prioritising workloads across multiple projects and educational programmes.

Qualifications

BTEC level 4, HNC, or apprenticeship in mechanical/manufacturing engineering discipline, or equivalent practical work experience in a relevant field.
