Research Associate (Clinical Exercise Physiology)

Manchester Metropolitan University – Science & Engineering

Location: Manchester All Saints Campus

This is a fantastic opportunity for two Research Associates to join our team working on a programme of research funded by the charity North West Cancer Research (UK) and delivered in collaboration with clinical colleagues from Salford Royal Hospital, Manchester Foundation Trust and Prehab4Cancer. The project will determine the effectiveness of resistance exercise prehabilitation for preventing muscle wasting and improving patient outcomes during treatment for Oesophageal and Gastric cancers.

What are we looking for?

For this position, we are seeking a Clinical Exercise Physiologist to coordinate the day-to-day research planning and delivery, including:

  • Lead the development and delivery of the exercise training sessions.
  • Lead the quantitative and qualitative assessments of patients' physical fitness to determine changes that occur during the period of exercise prehabilitation.
  • Lead the use of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and other standard assessments of body composition and fitness.
  • Assist the technical specialists to organise, collect and analyse advanced magnetic resonance imaging and CT data and the collection and processing of patients' samples.
  • Analyse and write-up the research findings for lay-public and scientific outputs.

What should you bring?

  • A first degree in Exercise Sciences or similar discipline and a postgraduate qualification at Masters or PhD levels. The ideal candidate will have a Masters in Clinical Exercise Physiology, with registration in the UK.
  • Research or practical experience in the application of physical functional assessments and clinical exercise physiology standards to monitor and improve health for patient groups.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and to contribute positively to the successful delivery of this research programme.

If you would like to join our team and share our ambition, we would love to receive an application from you. Note that we are also recruiting for a biomedical scientist (see separate job reference) to work on this project.
