Job Ref: 178217

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher in Professor Richard White’s lab to work on a project exploring tumour-host interactions in the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at the Nuffield Department of Medicine. The lab studies how developmental and microenvironmental programs promote cancer. These programs endow cancer cells with plasticity, allowing them to take on new phenotypes above and beyond DNA mutations. We primarily study this using the zebrafish, a vertebrate model organism notable for its rapid genetic manipulation and optical transparency of the casper strain. We also use human iPS cell models of cancer to complement what can be done in the fish.

You will participate in the Ludwig Cancer Research funded research programme led by Professor Richard White to design and perform research utilising zebrafish, cancer cell lines and human iPS models of cancer. You will manage your own academic research and administrative activities - this involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines and adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols. You will be responsible for testing hypotheses and analysing scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate, as well as contributing ideas for new research projects. You will collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles and occasionally present papers and posters and operate laboratory equipment used for all aspects of cell/molecular biology/biochemistry.

It is essential that you hold a DPhil/PhD (or close to completion) in a life science field and have expertise in both host and zebrafish genetics. You will have a working knowledge of infection biology with mycobacterial species including mycobacterium tuberculosis and macrophage biology. Experience working with high-resolution imaging, first author publication in high-impact journal, and sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes are essential to the role. You will also have the ability to manage own academic research and associated activities and the ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings are also essential.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application.

Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.

This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract for 3 years and is funded by the Ludwig.

Only applications received before 12 midday on 6 March 2025 will be considered. Please quote 178217 on all correspondence.
