The Disability Coordinator plays a key role in providing professional, specialist advice and guidance to support disabled students, including those with specific learning differences, long-term health conditions, sensory impairments, and mental health difficulties. The goal is to ensure students can access their studies effectively, promoting academic progress and student retention. This role also requires the advisor to contribute to the development, implementation, and review of College policies and procedures related to students with disabilities, ensuring compliance with the Equality Act 2010. The post holder will need to engage proactively with students, academic schools, and professional services to foster understanding and utilisation of our services. The advisor may be required to support other colleauges and cover duties within student support when necessary.
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Provide one-to-one advice and guidance to disabled students, including those with specific learning differences, Autistic Spectrum Conditions, sensory impairments, long-term health conditions, and mental health difficulties.
- Offer support and guidance to both current and prospective students, including those on higher education and apprenticeship programs.
- Develop comprehensive Individual Support Plans (ISPs) for students and communicate these to relevant academic schools and stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of reasonable adjustments.
- Conduct student screenings for specific learning differences and offer advice and guidance on further diagnostic assessment as needed.
- Stay up-to-date with legislation and regulations related to disability and mental health to provide accurate, informed advice at all times.
- Maintain an accurate casework portfolio and provide ongoing support for students, ensuring effective access to studies throughout their college journey.
- Use the student records system (Unit-e) to record full and accurate casework data, in compliance with confidentiality standards and professional requirements.
- Identify when it is necessary to breach confidentiality and inform senior staff as appropriate, ensuring duty of care responsibilities are met.
- Assist students in applying for funding support, such as the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) or the College’s Reasonable Adjustment Fund, by liaising with external bodies like Student Finance England, SFW or SAAS.
- Work with external agencies such as Community Mental Health teams, Local Authorities, Social Services, Needs Assessors, Non-Medical Help (NMH) suppliers, and other relevant agencies as required.
- Refer students to other support services, or external agencies as appropriate.
- Liaise with the Examinations Team to implement special examination arrangements for disabled students, ensuring compliance with the Equality Act 2010.
- Ensure that any agreed reasonable adjustments are effectively implemented across academic and professional services.
- Deliver disability awareness training to college staff and contribute to the creation of Wellbeing promotional materials and student resources.
- Participate in student workshops, key events, and activities to promote the Wellbeing Service through various platforms, including VLE and social media channels.
- Develop and deliver information, guidance materials, and workshops for students and staff in a variety of formats.
- Complete and review Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) for students as necessary, ensuring health and safety requirements are met.
Ability to work flexibly is a requirement of this role; and you will be part of a rota that operates from Monday to Thursday 9 am to 7 pm and Friday to Sunday 9 am 6 pm.
