Background

The Copyright Librarian will act as the key person for complex enquiries from staff and students relating to copyright and licensing. They are responsible for promoting copyright literacy through staff and student engagement across the university.

They will provide support and guidance on copyright in the creation and use of teaching materials located in the virtual learning environment and on reading lists, whilst maintaining a comprehensive understanding of copyright legislation and exceptions, as well as being alert to emerging issues which have an impact on copyright, such as AI and open monographs.

Responsibilities

The Copyright Librarian will act as the main point of contact between the university and the Copyright Licensing Agency. They will oversee the Reading Lists Online digitisation process for course readings and associated automated reporting to the CLA using the Talis Aspire system. Also, they will deliver copyright guidance and support in response to enquiries received from students, researchers, and teaching staff.

A further responsibility is the management of the receipt of PhD theses in electronic format and their addition to the repository, City Research Online, for posterity.

Person Specification

The postholder will possess a demonstrable knowledge of UK copyright legislation and licensing schemes, including Creative Commons and their application to higher education. They will have experience of developing and delivering training or teaching, preferably within a higher education context, and be able to successfully communicate complex legislation and concepts to a range of audiences.

The postholder will be comfortable using a range of technologies including library management systems and MS Office software.
