Starting salary from £38,249 per annum, dependent on skills and experience, with an annual increment up to £45,413 per annum.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Research Associate to join the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Physics to conduct mathematical studies on sea-ice surface recovery from bottom pressure data.

Knowledge of sea ice characteristics, like thickness and distribution, is vital for understanding polar dynamics. The interaction between ocean waves and ice is crucial, influencing ice break-up and, consequently, solar energy absorption, impacting global warming. Extracting accurate information from satellites is challenging. The project aims to demonstrate mathematically how pressure measurements from the ocean bottom can be utilised to calculate surface wave features.

As a Senior Research Associate you will be associated with a particular project and will contribute ideas and/or enhancement of techniques or methodologies. You will perform mathematical analysis and numerical computations and interpret the results, write up results and present information on research progress and outcomes. You may be involved in the supervision of researchers and teaching of students within the School.

You will have a PhD in applied mathematics, preferably fluid mechanics. You will also have publications in respected journals within the field and be able to work in a proactive and results driven manner. Advanced skills directly relating to this research area would be advantageous.

This full-time post is available from 1 May 2025 on a fixed term basis for up to 36 months.
