The Research Fellow in Soil Science on CropSustaiN will be central to developing and conducting soil-based experiments to explore Biological Nitrification Inhibition (BNI) potential of novel wheat lines identified by collaborators. The research spans glasshouse and field experiments exploring the link between plant performance and nitrogen cycling, with careful monitoring of physicochemical constraints such as hydrological conditions (drought stress, wetting events, aeration), mechanical impedance and temperature stresses. It also involves laboratory experiments to explore BNI compound transport into soil and the spatial impacts.
The successful candidate will integrate novel research on plant-soil-microbe interactions within a large project team across several institutions. They will have a relevant PhD in plant-microbial-soil interactions with evidence of multidisciplinary research spanning nutrient cycling and soil physico-chemical conditions. The successful candidate will also be an effective communicator and team worker, with a scientific track record that includes good scientific publications. Experience setting up and maintaining controlled glasshouse and field experiments exploring plant-soil interactions is essential. This includes the use of sensors and data-loggers to measure soil properties, and further experience exploring the responses of plants and soil nutrient cycling to physical and/or chemical stresses. The candidate will be a hands-on researcher capable of independently setting up and monitoring highly controlled experiments requiring measurements of nutrient losses through gaseous emissions or leaching, plant nutrient capture and the cycling of fertiliser nitrogen by microorganisms.
Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 Salary Scale, £37,999 - £45,163 per annum with placement according to qualifications and experience. This post is fixed term until 30th May 2028.
