A postdoctoral fellow (PDF) position is open in the BACOR lab (Building a Culture of Resilience) of Dr. Haorui Wu, Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Resilience, in the School of Social Work, Faculty of Health, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

The PDF will assist with various research projects, examining the impacts of climate change and disasters across Canada and beyond, such as (1) promoting older adults’ engagement and empowering their leadership in disaster settings; (2) human-animal interactions (One Health and One Welfare); and (3) disaster mental health preparedness;
Job responsibilities include qualitative and quantitative research design, implementation, data analysis, and publication. Depending on qualifications, the research activities could include co-developing research proposals, stakeholder engagement, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, drafting policy briefs and publications, and co-supervising undergraduate and graduate students etc.

The PDF will thrive in an innovative, multi-stakeholder-engaged atmosphere by being flexible, self-motivated, detail-oriented, managing multiple tasks efficiently, and being a team player. The PDF will be part of a transdisciplinary team from various institutes across Canada, the U.S., and internationally. The PDF will be encouraged to publish extensively, develop advanced technical skills, strengthen their research portfolios, gain expertise in authoring grant applications, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and conduct domestic and international field research, depending on their interests and prior experience.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

  • A doctoral degree in social sciences, health sciences, or related fields (e.g., Geography, Education, Communication, Political Science, Public Health, Psychology, Sociology, and Urban Planning) focusing on hazards and disaster research by the appointment start date;
  • Peer-reviewed publications;
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills for both professionals and the general public;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in qualitative and/or quantitative research design, data interpretation, and knowledge mobilization;
  • Demonstrated project management skills and be able to work autonomously as well as collaboratively as part of a team;
  • Evidence of multidisciplinary collaborations in hazards and disaster research, practice, and policymaking; and
  • Experience working and living in a multicultural environment and demonstrated cultural sensitivity.

Salary Range/Pay Rate

$50,000 - $70,000
