Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is a globally recognised centre of excellence for teaching and research in tropical diseases. Our Centre for Drugs and Diagnostics (CDD) is establishing an expanded Global Therapeutics Unit, supported through the Expanding Excellence in England (E3) programme, to leverage existing expertise alongside emerging technologies capable of radically accelerating the translation pathway towards the delivery of new global health interventions.  

We seek internationally excellent translational researchers and leaders, with expertise in Global Health Therapeutics (traditional small molecule interventions and new therapeutic modalities), Pharmacometrics and AI, who share our vision and values to join this exciting new opportunity to contribute towards the delivery global health impact.

Through research and leadership, these positions will augment our cutting-edge capacity for therapeutics research and enable the development of new knowledge and solutions for treatments of priority infectious diseases.

Working with and leading academics in LSTM, Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust (MLW) or other appropriate international Centres, the successful candidates will, through active research and effective leadership develop cutting edge capacity for global health therapeutics research, enabling the development of new knowledge and understanding in the treatment and control of priority global health disease pathogens. The post holders will join a multi-disciplinary Centre of high-profile translational researchers and will liaise with key clinical trialists, experimental medicine specialists, policy makers and practitioners to contribute to developing new therapeutic tools aimed at reducing the morbidity, mortality and poverty associated with priority disease pathogens.

The successful candidates will benefit from the bespoke translational research environment and strong links with colleagues in endemic-countries allowing the smooth translation of therapeutic research from bench-to-application. Correspondingly, these partnerships allow the seeding of new impact-directed research questions from the clinic/field units back into our laboratories.

Qualifications, training & knowledge:

  • PHD or equivalent in a relevant subject area
  • Extensive knowledge of the subject area informed by substantial current research in the field Knowledge of strategic leadership principles and their effective application in a HEI setting
  • Demonstrate an understanding of global factors affecting the discipline and work of LSTM.
  • Understanding translational regulatory frameworks for Therapeutics and Diagnostics

Experience:

  • Evidence of established international reputation in academic field
  • Outstanding record of international level peer reviewed publications and research outputs
  • Strong record of successfully generating significant external funding (grants, contracts etc.) to support research projects
  • Proven record of research leadership in a HEI/Industry and experience of developing multidisciplinary research programmes (including stakeholders from academia, industry, MOH etc. for example)
  • Experience of initiating, planning, organizing, implementing and delivering major programmes of work of strategic organizational-wide benefit
  • Experience and knowledge of translating basic research discoveries into potential new medical solutions
  • Considerable leadership and management experience, including the effective use of resources and budgetary responsibility and evidence of the capacity to assume further, major leadership roles within and outside LSTM
  • Experience of leading, motivating and collaborating within highly successful teams Experience of academic governance and administration
