Introduction

At the University of Manchester, innovation is in our DNA. As the birthplace of modern computing and a global leader in research and discovery, our heritage inspires us to push boundaries and challenge conventional thinking. Here, every idea has the potential to change the world, and our IT Services team is at the forefront of shaping the digital future of one of the UK’s most respected institutions.

Why we are hiring

Our IT landscape is evolving rapidly, and we’re committed to staying ahead of the curve. As we expand our strategic vision and navigate new technological frontiers, we need a forward-thinking Solution Architect. This role has been created to bridge the gap between business aspirations and innovative IT solutions, ensuring our designs not only meet today’s needs but also anticipate tomorrow’s challenges. We’re looking for someone ready to grow with us, bringing fresh ideas and a passion for continuous learning to a dynamic, collaborative environment.

About this role

As a Solution Architect, you’ll be instrumental in transforming business requirements and IT strategy into robust, future-proof designs. You will guide projects from conception to implementation, creating both high- and low-level designs that align with our strategic objectives. Working closely with engineering teams, suppliers, and diverse stakeholders, you’ll ensure our architectural standards drive innovation and excellence across our IT estate. This is your chance to leave a lasting impact on a complex, integrated system landscape, and to shape the technological future of one of the largest universities in the UK.

What we look for

  • Strategic Vision: Ability to see the big picture and translate complex business challenges into innovative IT solutions.
  • Growth Mindset: A passion for learning, adaptability, and a willingness to evolve with emerging technologies and frameworks.
  • Collaborative Communicator: Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels and foster a culture of inclusivity and shared success.
  • Innovative Problem Solver: Resourcefulness and creativity in designing scalable, robust solutions that meet diverse needs.
  • Resilient Leader: A proactive, high-potential individual who thrives in a dynamic environment and is ready to take on new challenges with confidence.
  • Technical Acumen: Familiarity with architectural frameworks such as TOGAF or SAFe is a plus—but your potential to learn and grow is what matters most.
