ABOUT US

Transforming lives through excellent education

London Met is an extraordinary institution. Equity and social inclusion have always been our driving principles, and it's what makes the University so unique. Our organisation is distinctive, both in its eclectic and diverse community of students and staff, and also for its historical role in serving some of London’s most deprived boroughs. Everything we do is underpinned by our philosophy that an individual should have the opportunity to transform their life through the power of education.

Equipping our students with the tools for their future is at the heart of our academic offering. We pride ourselves on providing our students with access to a wealth of opportunities and professions. Our graduates benefit personally, but also contribute their unique perspectives to society, culture, public service and the economy in all areas of London, the UK and around the world.

ABOUT THE POST

London Metropolitan University is seeking two new Independent Members of its Board of Governors to commence in Summer 2025.

The Board has agreed to take positive action so is actively seeking applications from potential governors who share lived experiences with our student body.

A vibrant centre of learning, London Met’s mission is to transform lives through excellent education. With over 14,000 students in 2023-24, the University is one of the most diverse in London, and has a strong focus on widening participation and on improving the life chances of its graduates. London Met is at a crucial and exciting phase in its history as it develops its new strategic plan for 2025-2030.

London Met is looking for experienced Board members from diverse backgrounds with an interest and insight into the issues facing higher education. Governors will bring thoughtful and mature debate to board meetings, be principled yet innovative, and be ready to make tough decisions to shape the University’s future. A willingness to be challenging but constructive, resilience, and a strong strategic focus are essential for this role. New members of the University Board of Governors will be successful strategic thinkers, with an exceptional record of achievement in one of the following areas: Audit and Risk, corporate finance and Higher Education. A strong track record in public or private sector audit & risk, including NED roles, is particularly desirable.

Board members serve as directors of the University and as trustees in the University’s role as a charity and are expected to comply with relevant regulations and the Nolan Principles.

The Board has five scheduled meetings and one strategy day per year. Governors are expected to serve on at least one of the Board’s sub-committees, which meet 3-4 times per year. The overall time commitment is around one day per month. Governors are not paid, but expenses are reimbursed

For an informal conversation about this opportunity please contact Nikki Le Faou, University Secretary, on n.lefaou@londonmet.ac.uk.

HOW TO APPLY

Applications should consist of a letter addressing the criteria in the role description and person specification (no more than 1 side of A4); CV (no more than 2 sides of A4), and a 1-page equality, diversity and inclusion statement. The application should be sent to Nikki Le Faou at n.lefaou@londonmet.ac.uk by Thursday 6 March 2025.
