Applications are invited for a joint appointment as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Chinese Demographic History at the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Research Hub of Population Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences (Ref.: 531306), to commence on July 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.
Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, established in 2001 at The University of Hong Kong, has a mission to promote innovative, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences, with a focus on China. The Institute seeks to provide a vibrant hub for studying the multi-facets of the Chinese civilization and its long developmental history using both new and traditional approaches. Launched by the Faculty of Social Sciences, HKU Research Hub of Population Studies aims to provide an understanding of local, national, regional, and international demographic patterns. The Hub focuses on multi-disciplinary research concerning various population-related issues and public policy, addressing the global needs for theoretical, methodological, and practical advancements in population and health research. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. inĀ Economic History, Chinese Studies, Historical Demography, and/or related fields, with a preference for those who specialise in data-based research on Chinese population demography and social history. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in quantitative research methods, with strong publication record in reputable academic journals and/or with leading publishers.
A proven track record of commitment to excellence in teaching and research is essential. The successful candidate is expected to excel in undergraduate teaching, postgraduate supervision, and actively participate in collaborative research initiatives.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, HK salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will include a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
