About the role

The Senior Tutor will be responsible for ensuring all students receive high-quality support throughout their time at Imperial. They will have overall responsibility for the academic and pastoral care of undergraduate students in the Department.

As either a Senior Teaching Fellow (Learning and Teaching Job Family, Level 4) or a Principal Teaching Fellow (Learning and Teaching Job Family, Level 5), the postholder will deliver teaching in the Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate courses that align with their technical background. They will understand the educational needs, processes, and challenges of our students and initiate improvements in our educational programmes and service provision in collaboration with students and teaching staff.

What you would be doing

FOR APPOINTMENT TO SENIOR TEACHING FELLOW

  • Student Support
  • Maintain open and constructive communication channels with students; meet regularly with year groups, individual students and elected student representatives; maintain open-door availability to students.
  • Promote the university's responsibility for its pastoral care of students.
  • Liaise with the College Disabilities Officer and the Registry to ensure that students with special educational needs are advised and assisted appropriately.
  • Be responsible for managing the personal tutoring system in the Department to ensure that the system supports students and the degree programme and is in line with university policy.
  • Ensure that each student is allocated a personal tutor, considering any complex needs.

Teaching and Learning Support

  • Contribute to the delivery of our degree programmes by teaching across the curriculum, including designing and delivering lectures and laboratory classes within our programmes.
  • Develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students

Education Research and Scholarship

  • Engage in scholarly activities related to subject area and higher education practice.
  • Contribute to the process of securing funds for scholarly activities.
  • Be responsible for the development of new initiatives in teaching within the Department.
  • Apply knowledge acquired from scholarship to teaching.

IN ADDITION, FOR APPOINTMENT TO PRINCIPAL TEACHING FELLOW

Teaching and Learning Support

  • Provide strategic leadership in curriculum design and delivery across a range of programmes of study at various levels, in collaboration with the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUGS) and Associate Head of Department (Teaching & Education Strategy).
  • Identify areas where teaching provision needs revision or improvement, and lead change in consultation with students and teaching staff.
  • Lead on digital learning and learning technologies and liaise with the Educational Technology teams of the Faculty of Engineering and College.
  • Develop and implement teaching policies and procedures in conjunction with the DUGS.

Education Research and Scholarship

  •  Be proactive in helping secure internal or external funding for teaching initiatives or scholarship.
  • Be responsible for the development of teaching and learning strategies in the Department, Faculty and College.
  • Actively participate in relevant conferences and workshops both internally and nationally.

What we are looking for

REQUIREMENTS – SENIOR TEACHING FELLOW

Education

  • A degree (or equivalent) and postgraduate qualification in Engineering, Mathematics or Physical Sciences.
  • A recognised qualification in Higher Education learning and teaching at PGCert level (or equivalent) or higher.
  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or equivalent
  • Experience in providing and managing pastoral support to learners and knowledge of the challenges which students may encounter
  • Experience of managing confidential information
  • Experience of managing cases of academic misconduct by students
  • Ability to mentor and communicate effectively with students
  • Ability to deliver excellent student support
  • Ability to design, deliver and innovate high-quality teaching activities
