We have an opportunity for a Research Associate to make a leading contribution to the project Sustainable Designs for Living and Learning (SDLL): Embedding Multilingualism into Learning for Sustainability working with Lavinia Hirsu, Dobrochna Futro, Alison Phipps from the University of Glasgow, as well as Fhiona Mackay, Karen Faulds, and Jane Catlin from the University of Strathclyde. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and other research outputs, as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.

Sustainable Designs for Living and Learning is a new project which brings together the arts, language learning, multilingualism, and permaculture design. This project builds on previous collaborations and pilot initiatives (e.g., Multilingualism through Art) that have introduced arts-based activities into language learning in different contexts across Scotland. The project will start in May 2025, and it will focus on the critical role of multilingualism in shaping human-environment ecologies. We will collaborate with different groups of participants and co-researchers, including children, artists, teachers, researchers and educators. We aim to develop new creative learning approaches, resources and professional development opportunities for teachers and young learners so they are equipped to fully engage in their communities.

Candidates should have a comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the wider subject area, such as multilingualism/plurilingualism, education for sustainability, eco-pedagogies and environmental learning, decolonial language theories and practice, and/or other specialisms relevant to the project.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Lavinia Hirsu, Lavinia.Hirsu@glasgow.ac.uk
