We are seeking an applicant for a fully-funded ERC Research Assistant position with the opportunity to undertake PhD studies in number theory and arithmetic geometry led by Prof. Jack Thorne in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics.
This position is advertised in connection with the PI's ERC Consolidator Grant project `Modularity and Reciprocity: a Robust Approach'. The focus of this project is the arithmetic aspect of the Langlands programme, which aims to study the relation between automorphic forms and Galois representations. Relevant topics to be investigated include the deformation theory of Galois representations, the cohomology of arithmetic groups and Shimura varieties, and the representation theory of reductive groups with coefficients in locally compact topological rings.
Duties include undertaking your own program of research and assisting with ongoing research programmes; writing up results for publication; and presenting your work to colleagues at conferences or seminars, both internally and externally. You may also be asked to assist in organizing various seminars and study groups. During the period of funding for this role, you will be eligible to complete your PhD studies.
The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in pure mathematics by the start date of the position and should have relevant background knowledge in number theory, arithmetic geometry, and the theory of automorphic forms.
Start date: 1 September 2025
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 4 years.
