The post provides the successful individual with an exciting and unique opportunity to be part of a project that embeds two trials that interrogate approaches for screening and management of STIs in pregnancy in Zimbabwe. The first trial (PROMISE) funded by the UK-MRC and French ANRS aims to investigate the impact of screening for curable STIs on maternal and neonatal health outcomes. The second trial (STOP) funded by the Gates Foundation will trial a novel formulation of syphilis treatment in pregnancy.
The ideal candidate will have a postgraduate degree or ideally a doctoral degree, possess sound knowledge of STIs and sexual reproductive health, experience of writing trial protocols and field management, exceptional data management & analytical skills and have experience of working in a low-income setting. Experience of working in southern Africa is desirable. Further particulars are included in the job description.
The job-holder will work closely with the LSHTM PIs (Profs. Rashida Ferrand & Michael Marks) and with the team in Zimbabwe to implement the trials including data collection, management, analysis and dissemination. The individual will be supported to develop their own research interest and to prepare a postdoctoral research fellowship.
The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE & fixed-term until 30 April 2028.
The post is jointly funded by the UK-MRC and the Gates Foundation project and is available from 01 May 2025.
The salary will be on the academic pathway salary scale, grade 6 in the range of £44,847 – 50,808 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro-rata for part-time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM.
