We invite applicants for a postdoc position (Research Associate) for a project in Dr Helle Jørgensen's group in the Heart and Lung Research Institute at the University of Cambridge. The position is available for until 30th August 2027 in the first instance, starting on 1st April 2025.

The Jørgensen group studies regulation of cell plasticity and heterogeneity in vascular condistions, such as atherosclerosis, with an aim to improve disease prevention and patient treatment. We are now seeking a highly talented and motivated individual to join our team to identify intrinsic and extrinsic signals that regulate cellular responses underlying disease. The project will involve analysis of large datasets and mechanistic and functional analysis using both in vitro and in vivo disease models.

We are looking for a group member that has strong communication skills and a proactive attitude, with an interest in liaising with internal and external collaborators. The candidate should have a UK Home Office Personal Licence and demonstrated expertise with animal models, some experience with computational data analysis and a deep knowledge of vascular cell biology and disease. Some experience with generation and analysis of large datasets is also required.

 Essential skills

  • PhD degree, or submitted thesis, in a relevant area (e.g. biological science or a numeric discipline with experience in experimental research)
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular biology
  • UK Home Office Personal Licence
  • Experience with animal vascular disease models
  • Expertise in establishing primary cell cultures and functional assays
  • Ability to plan and manage research project
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task
  •  Experience in writing scientific manuscripts and reports
  • Effective presentation skills

Desirable skills

  • Experience in molecular and cell biology
  • Experience with animal surgery
  • Knowledge of R and/or Python for analysis of large datasets
  • Strong publication record
  • UK Home Office Personal Licence

Candidates in the process of submitting their PhD thesis or awaiting degree conferral will be considered. In this case, appointment would be at the level of Research Assistant, Grade 5. On receipt of PhD award, the appointee would move to Grade 7, Research Associate.
