The College wishes to appoint one 6-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Economics to provide teaching in prelims Probability and Statistics, second-year core Microeconomics and Quantitative Economics (econometrics), and additional third-year options teaching, preferably including Game Theory in addition to another options paper. The post will commence in September 2025 and will run until the end of August 2027.

Duties

Lady Margaret Hall has two Tutorial Fellows in Economics in addition to one Stipendiary Lecturer in Economics.

In addition to teaching, the Lecturer(s) will be expected to help with related administrative duties and pastoral duties. These will include serving as Personal Tutor to undergraduates, helping to organise their tuition, to monitor their progress and to provide general pastoral support. The post will also involve the setting and marking of collections (termly college examinations) and completing tutorial reports on the Tutorial Management System. The postholder may be invited to act as “graduate adviser” to a small number of students.

The Lecturer(s) will also take part in the annual undergraduate admissions exercise in December, which includes shortlisting and interviewing applicants. The Lecturer(s) will be encouraged to participate in recruitment and access initiatives relating to Economics, (e.g. Open Days and Taster Days in the College) and in the social events with students which are funded by the College. It is hoped that the Lecturer(s) will become an active member of the college community and participate in the life of the College. The appointment carries with it membership of the College’s Education Committee, which meets once a term.

Selection Criteria

The successful candidate(s) will:

  • Have completed a postgraduate qualification in Economics or its pedagogy.
  • Have the ability to be an effective and inspiring teacher in the tutorial context. Some direct experience of tutorial teaching would be an advantage.
  • Have the ability to teach prelims probability and statistics, second year core microeconomics and econometrics and preferably third year options game theory.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of high achieving undergraduates, and a commitment to fostering high academic achievement in undergraduates.
  • Have a high level of academic achievement (commensurate with the candidate’s career stage).
  • Good communication skills, and sensitivity to deal effectively with pastoral duties.

Salary and Benefits

Salary will be on the Senior Tutors’ scale (stages 3-5) for Stipendiary Lecturers (£17,491 to £18,308) per annum for 6 hours at current 2024/25 rates. [3-hour post salary range will be £8,746 - £9,154).

The post is superannuated within the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).

A research allowance of £366 per annum.

The Lecturer will be entitled to weekday lunches without charge throughout the period of appointment and to one free dinner per week. 

The Lecturer may have access to a shared college room but bookable teaching rooms are available. The Lecturer will be eligible for membership of the Senior Common Room at Lady Margaret Hall.
