NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is a Special Health Authority within the NHS, responsible for optimising the supply of blood, organs, plasma, and tissues while enhancing the quality and efficiency of blood and transplant services. 

The Statistics and Clinical Research group provides expertise in study design and analysis across organ and tissue donation, transplantation, blood donation, and transfusion medicine. The NHSBT Clinical Trials Unit, part of this group, is responsible for clinical trial design, conduct, and analysis. The insights gained inform critical decisions about donation, transplantation, transfusion practices, and patient care. 

A permanent opportunity has arisen for a Principal Statistician, based in our Bristol office, with hybrid working available. You will lead statistical work within transfusion medicine or organ and tissue donation and transplantation while engaging in statistical and management activities. You will have line management responsibility for a small team and be part of the Statistics Management Group, providing leadership to the wider team.

Main Duties of the Job 

  • As a Principal Statistician, you will: 
  • Provide statistical expertise in specialist areas, such as clinical trial design or kidney transplantation, and report findings to NHSBT specialist Advisory Groups, the Department of Health, and other stakeholders. 
  • Coordinate, plan, and allocate work as part of the Statistics Management Group, ensuring alignment with business and clinical research plans. 
  • Advise senior and other statisticians on priorities, workload management, and database-related issues to improve effectiveness. 
  • Line manage a team of statisticians, overseeing appraisals, staff development, motivation, and work plans. 

About You 

Experience and Knowledge 

  • Expertise in univariate and multifactorial survival analysis and advanced modelling techniques. 
  • Proven leadership in statistical projects or programmes. 
  • Team management experience, including workload allocation and assessment. 
  • Proficiency in statistical software such as SAS (preferred), Python, Stata, or R. 
  • Ability to manage workloads and resources to meet deadlines. 
  • Substantial experience in statistical applications. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint).

Qualifications and Training 

  • MSc in a statistical subject or equivalent experience. 
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development (CPD).
