We are one of the UK’s largest engineering faculties. Join our team, show us how to think even bigger – and we’ll help you explore what you are capable of, to inspire future generations of transportation engineers at our world-renowned university.
Our Transportation Planning and Engineering team is growing, and we’d like you to join us to help us broaden our research themes and expand our teaching activities. Have you a passion for designing, managing and evaluating sustainable systems across all forms of transport? Do you apply your expertise in transportation planning and engineering using new technologies like data science, sensing or digital twins? Are you passionate about involving stakeholders to foster inclusive design? And can you share your knowledge with clarity and enthusiasm?
The Transportation Research Group at the University of Southampton is a unique place to explore what you are capable of. Housed in the Boldrewood campus, we inspire students to explore their strengths and open up a wealth of career opportunities. Whether you’re pursuing a new career path in higher education, returning to work after a career break or looking to develop existing academic skills, Southampton is the place to do something unique with your expertise.
Join us, and you’ll be able to shape a role that is uniquely tailored to your interests and lifestyle. For example, a member of our department was first appointed as a Lecturer in 2019. Within four years she was promoted to Associate Professor, developed new undergraduate teaching, and won a prestigious Fellowship to open up new research avenues.
Ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide, we’re bold, progressive and keen to push the boundaries of what we’re teaching our students - and what we’re learning alongside them. So we actively encourage and support our lecturers to pursue their research and other activity in their fields of interest. After all, when everyone brings and shares their own ideas and findings, it helps us to stay at the forefront of thinking. Our reputation for teaching, research and enterprise is exceptional, and our team operates some of the most modern Transportation Engineering laboratories in the UK.
To apply, you’ll need a PhD, or equivalent professional qualifications, with research experience and a collaborative approach to working across research areas and disciplines. It’s not essential that you have teaching experience, but you must have the confidence and presence to inspire students – through both group lecturing and one-to-one mentoring. Whatever you bring to the team, we’ll support you to develop your skills and keep making progress in our forward-thinking department.
We particularly welcome applicants who hold a competitive Fellowship in a relevant field. Providing a research-intensive workload balance consistent with your Fellowship allowing you to capitalise on this position, while knowing that you have a smooth pathway directly into a permanent full balanced academic position at Southampton after the Fellowship.
Athena SWAN silver award recognised, we’re committed to improving equality for women in science and engineering, we’ll help you find a good work/life balance with flexible or even part-time working hours. And, with access to onsite childcare facilities, our comprehensive benefits package also includes a contributory pension scheme, generous holiday allowance, subsidised health and fitness facilities, cycle-to-work scheme and a range of discounts.
