The Governing Body of Downing College, Cambridge, invites applications for election to the Kim and Julianna Silverman Research Fellowship.
This Fellowship is open to graduates in Physical and Biological Natural Sciences, Engineering or Computer Science from any University. The competition is open to existing post-doctoral engineers and scientists who are able to demonstrate outstanding intellectual ability and a programme of activity with the potential to improve over time the lives of others. The successful candidate will have a background that encompasses and sometimes transcends traditional academic disciplines and will have the ability to communicate the importance and value of their work to all academic communities. As such this Fellowship is suited to applicants who can demonstrate outputs from their post-doctoral research.
This Fellowship may be held for a period of 3 years from 1st October 2025 at the earliest with renewal possible for a further 2 years. It will support research work in one or more of the University’s Departments, therefore applications must be supported by a statement from the Head of Department confirming that access to space and facilities to support the applicant’s research will be available for 3 years in the first instance.
The successful candidates will have a background that encompasses and sometimes transcends traditional academic disciplines including, but not limited to, the following general research areas: Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Materials Science & Matallurgy, Mathematics, Physical Geography, Physics, Synthetic Biology.
The stipend is £35,116 (this figure is reviewed annually and standard increments awarded during the coming academic year will be included before October 2025). A non-stipendiary Fellowship will be offered to the successful applicant if they already hold a funded research position.

The successful applicant is also eligible to receive the College’s benefit package, including membership of USS and subsidised membership of the College’s health and dental schemes. The successful applicant will also have use of the College gym.
The new Research Fellow will be expected to undertake up to four hours of small group teaching per week in term-time (remunerated separately) and to become a member of the Governing Body of the College, participating in the governance and communal life of Downing College.
