Hertford College (“the one with the bridge”) is a constituent college of The University of Oxford, and a registered charity. The college occupies a central site in Oxford, opposite the Bodleian Library.
Hertford is a friendly yet ambitious college dedicated to the principles of access and equality of opportunity. It is proud of its open and progressive history. It has an academic strategy designed to facilitate excellence in teaching and research and an estates strategy that includes plans for large scale redevelopment, sustainability projects as well as new build projects.
Hertford College is seeking to employ an HR professional with demonstrable experience and knowledge in the breadth of the employee lifecycle. This new role will further centralise and increase the colleges HR function to help deliver on key people priorities and projects.
The HR Officer will join the HR Manager at a time of growth and change, supporting the continued provision of a professional fast-paced and relevant service, ensuring up-to-date application of employment law and best practice in line with business needs.
The HR administration for academic staff has traditionally been carried out by the Academic Office and Principal’s Office. This administration will now move into the HR team to provide a consistent and professional HR function across the college.
There are also several significant projects underway and planned for all groups of staff from casuals, to support staff to academics, such as implementing stage 2 of the HRIS, policy renewal including the employee handbook, a comprehensive review of the staff benefits and terms & conditions, the creation of online self-help tools and resources, and the achievement of a degree of automation with high volume repetitive tasks.
The College is a registered charity. Hertford encourages consultation and consideration of a wide variety of views helped by communication directly with staff and through a well-established Staff Consultative Committee. The HR Officer has a key role to play in staff liaison to support a positive and inclusive culture and to enhance staff wellbeing.
The post is ideal for someone who is proactive, practical and able to work autonomously in a fast-paced, professional environment. You will have a proven track record and experience of working in an HR administrative or advisory role, ideally gained in a HR Generalist role in either a higher education environment or charity sector. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential: the post holder will need to build close and effective working relationships throughout Hertford and the wider collegiate university.
