Research Assistant in Cancer Biology

 We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Research Assistant to assist with the molecular characterisation of human tumours and maintenance and analysis of model systems we have generated in our laboratory. The post will focus principally on the mechanisms and consequences of immune escape in colorectal and endometrial cancers, thought there will be flexibility to contribute to other projects. This role extends the longstanding interest of our group in genomic instability and tumour immunology including our recent work in this area (Cornish et al. Nature, Frei et al. Lancet Oncology, Glaire et al. J Pathol), and will synergise with the LynchVax and GO-PRECISE CRC-VAX projects which are led or co-led by the Principal Investigator.

You will be responsible for undertaking laboratory work as required in molecular and functional genetics, such as sample preparation, genotyping, mutation screening, and analysis of tumours, cell culture, and genetic manipulation. You will also collate basic output data in a format for use by analysts and others within the group, undertake quality control and preparing data for review and statistical analysis, and collate and present data for other laboratory work, such as Home Office returns for mouse procedures (if appropriate). Undertaking other duties as required within the general area of the laboratory’s projects, commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of this post, taking accountability for your professional conduct within the Group and the Centre, and ensuring that all conduct is with due regard to the University Equal Opportunities and Data Protection policies are also essential to the role.

It is essential that you hold a degree in a relevant subject and have demonstrable academic and technical ability. Commitment to high standards, including record keeping, ability to learn rapidly and to master several techniques, and good written and electronic communication skills are essential to the role. It is essential you possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes, and will have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write text that can be published, present data at conferences, and represent the research group at meetings. Demonstrable interest in medical research is highly desirable.
