About the School
The School of Health and Social Care has an excellent reputation for teaching and research. Our academic members of staff include occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychological therapists, nurses, social workers, oral health practitioners and sociologists. The School is run over two campuses: Southend and Colchester. Academic staff are supported by a team of administrative staff based at both Colchester and Southend campuses.
Duties of the Role
The School is seeking to appoint two Lecturers in Speech and Language Therapy to complement our existing team. There is one full-time position (earliest start date is 31 March 2025), and one part time position (earliest start date is 30 June 2025), which is 0.6 Full Time Equivalent. The posts include a significant contribution to our Speech and Language Therapy courses at Colchester campus, which include an undergraduate, postgraduate, and degree apprenticeship course. It is expected that as a member of staff you would assist the Head of Division, providing practical support to the team, undertaking programme/module leadership, teaching, and assessment duties where needed, as well as supporting allocation and preparation of students for their clinical placements. We are particularly interested in attracting applicants with areas of specialism that can contribute to the leadership of our dysphagia and Eating, Drinking and Swallowing provision.
This role will require management, administration, and organisation alongside support of students on our existing programmes, and generally enhancing our research-led teaching in Speech and Language Therapy. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to the School’s growing CPD portfolio and to other courses across the School.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established and successful team at the University of Essex to enhance your skills and experience in this field. You will be a member of the Speech and Language Therapy Division, one of the seven Divisions in the School of Health and Social Care.
Qualifications and Skills required
Applicants will hold a Relevant doctoral level research degree or equivalent professional experience or practice, or be close to completion of PhD. Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate, along with a HCPC registration as a Speech and Language Therapist or an equivalent EU / International registration or ability to gain are essential to the post.
The successful candidate will have the ability and willingness to complement and continuously enhance the department/school’s education strengths and areas of planned development. A commitment to the on-going evaluation of their own teaching and an ability to do this effectively, with the support of others where appropriate is also essential.
In addition, for ASER contracts, candidates will have a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes and evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile.
