Department

The School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences (SRES) is a vibrant and dynamic school that provides an opportunity to work collaboratively across the sciences of exercise, performance, health and rehabilitation. We have a growing portfolio of taught programmes including the British Psychological Society’s accredited undergraduate (co-taught with the Department of Psychology and providing students eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartership) and masters (Stage 1 qualification) in Sport and Exercise Psychology. We are looking for someone who can join our team and share their expertise in the area of Sport and/or Exercise Psychology. 

Essex is an ideal home for an academic wishing to situate their research in the area of Sport and/or Exercise Psychology. We have researchers working in the fields of sports performance, public health, community interventions and applied practice. Across UoE, health and wellbeing is a substantial part of our research, consultation work and teaching portfolio with the establishment of the Institute of Public Health and Wellbeing, Centre for Coastal Communities and the Health and Wellbeing Hub. Essex also has a reputation for leading advancements in data analytics and big data surveys.

We’re currently recruiting a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader to join our diverse community of scholars to contribute to our undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes and to provide supervision to our growing postgraduate research community.

Duties of the Role

Develop high quality research and education Sport and/or Exercise Psychology through the establishment of an internationally excellent research programme, the publication of high-quality research papers & development of innovative approaches to teaching. Other aspects of the role include supervision of postgraduate research students and other leadership, teaching and administration duties.

Duties at Lecturer level include effective engagement in substantive teaching and learning support at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will carry out research activities that will as a minimum meet the University’s expectations for future Research Exercise Framework (REF) exercises.

Duties at Senior Lecturer/Reader level will engage in both curriculum development, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and research supervision at both an individual and a strategic level, and individual and/or collaborative research activity resulting in internationally excellent publications that is in keeping with REF criteria. In addition, you will provide research leadership and engage in activities that will enhance the research profile of the Department.

At any level, you will be expected to generate research income appropriate in scale to career stage and subject area norms.

Skills and qualifications required

You will possess a doctoral level research degree in a relevant discipline (or be close to completing your studies for Lecturer level) or equivalent professional experience or practice.

Applicants at Lecturer level will have proven experience of teaching at both undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels or demonstrable potential to achieve. Applicants will also have evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile.

Applicants at Senior Lecturer/Reader level will have a sustained record of effectiveness in education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will have an established and internationally recognised research profile, with a well-developed future research agenda and a record of success in generating external research income appropriate in scale to disciplinary norms and career stage.

At any level, you will also need to have evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes.
