Professor in Computational Micromechanics of Materials for Wind Energy Applications

Technical University of Denmark - Department of Wind and Energy Systems

Location: Roskilde - Denmark
Salary: Based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 4th February 2025
Closes: 4th March 2025

If you are keen on contributing to the green transition, envisioning a planet running entirely on renewable energy, and looking for the best possible environment for fulfilling your dreams and ambitions, it is right here in front of you.

At DTU Wind and Energy Systems we are pushing the research boundaries in the domain of advanced and reliable materials for wind energy applications, with focus on computational micromechanics of materials for wind energy, multiscale computational modelling of advanced materials for wind turbine blades, leading to better predictive capabilities and development of new smart and high performance materials, to be used to improve wind turbine performance, extend wind turbine lifetime, ensure more efficient maintenance and protection of wind turbines.

The Department of Wind and Energy Systems at the Technical University of Denmark is seeking applicants for a position as Professor in computational micromechanics of materials for wind energy applications.

This is your opportunity to join a dynamic team dedicated to making a significant impact on the planet’s future. We offer a multidisciplinary, international, and friendly atmosphere, encouraging creativity, diversity, empathy, and teamwork.

Responsibilities and qualifications

As our new professor in computational micromechanics of materials for wind energy applications, you are expected to strengthen research in the development of advanced materials for wind turbines, digitization and computational modelling of wind turbine blade materials, including the blade erosion, protection and recycling.

You should demonstrate scientific excellence within the field computational mechanics and micromechanics of materials, in particular, multiscale, microstructure-based modelling of engineered materials, covering various length scales, from nano to macro, with application to the wind energy materials, composites and coatings. The scientific leadership should be demonstrated by documenting high quality publications, books, and indicators of scientific impact. You should have experience in coordinating international and national research projects, and collaboration with wind energy industry.

As professor, you will be responsible for building up an internationally recognised research activity within computational modelling and development of advanced materials for wind energy applications, including composites for wind turbine blades, anti-erosion coatings, adhesive joints, maintenance and repair of wind turbines.

You are expected to contribute to the following research challenges:

  • Digitization and multi-scale computational modeling of degradation of wind turbine blade materials, with view on life extension and recyclability,
  • Development of advanced materials for wind energy applications, including hybrid composites, nano- and micro-engineered materials, composites and coatings, through multiscale modelling,
  • Optimization of recycling technology through computational multiphysics modelling,
  • Improving durability, maintenance efficiency and repair of wind turbine blades, through advanced experimental-numerical approaches,
  • Use advanced computational modelling to enable development and utilization of innovative smart materials for wind energy applications, with sensing and self-repairing potential.

Application procedure

Your complete online application must be submitted no later than 4 March 2025 (23:59 Danish time).
