Position

The Dean of Learning and Teaching will lead the delivery of the College’s key education strategies in line with the OFS conditions, to ensure academic staff deliver a high-quality academic experience to students and that the College meets the expectations of its regulators and awarding bodies for the quality of its teaching, learning and assessment.

  • To provide vision, leadership and strategic direction for all aspects of the College’s learning, teaching, assessment and academic staff development.
  • To oversee the maintenance, implementation and evaluation of the College’s education strategies, ensuring it is consistent with best practice and that it drives the delivery of excellent teaching and assessment according to the requirements of regulators and awarding bodies.
  • To lead the development and delivery of an academic development programme for all members of academic staff.
  • To maintain a network for the College’s teaching staff, supporting enhancements to pedagogy and the curriculum, and facilitating pedagogical scholarship.
  • To work in partnership with the Blended Learning Technologist to explore emerging teaching and learning technologies, advise the College on the adoption of new tools and enable their effective and efficient implementation by academic staff.
  • To initiate developments in learning, teaching and assessment in response to changes within the College (such as new subject areas) or externally, introducing new techniques or practices in collaboration with external partners and stakeholders.
  • To support the development and implementation of effective processes for the recruitment and induction of new academic staff, and the evaluation of teaching and learning.
  • To provide leadership and management to a team of Associate Deans of Learning and Teaching.
  • To represent the College externally in areas related to teaching, assessment and academic development.
  • To support the implementation of regulatory requirements and strategic plans, as and when required, such as OfS Registration and an application for Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP).
Requirements

Essential qualifications and experience

  • A relevant higher degree.
  • Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (or equivalent professional recognition).
  • Proven experience in the evaluation and enhancement of teaching and learning.
  • A track record in leading improvements to teaching, learning and assessment through teams of academic staff.
  • A track record of successful growth management, leading teams and implementing new structures, systems and processes.
  • Experience in fostering strong collaborative working relationships with external partner organisations at a senior level.
  • Professional recognition for the leadership of innovative practice in teaching and assessment.

Essential skills and abilities

  • Strong leadership qualities and skills consistent with a senior management position including the management, development and motivation of teams and individuals to drive high performance.
  • Ideally strongly self-motivated bringing credibility, energy, resilience and commitment.
  • High level communication skills, with the ability to represent the College effectively externally.
  • High level negotiation, influencing and enabling skills to ensure priorities are delivered.
  • Ability to work positively with stakeholders to achieve outcomes and deliver change through people.
  • A positive ‘can do’ attitude and approach and the ability to work at pace.
