A PhD is available from approximately Oct 2025 for a UK national student with an MSc, 1st or upper 2nd class bachelors degree in materials science and engineering or related subject. The PhD is designed to investigate the manufacture of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for lightweight aerospace structures. A range of different manufacturing techniques will be investigated, potentially including the polymer impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP), chemical vapour deposition and sol-gel based routes and then characterising the properties of the resulting CMCs extensively. There may well be a need for multiple iterations of the different processes.
