A PhD is available from approximately Oct 2025 for a UK national student with an MSc, 1st or upper 2nd class bachelors degree in materials science and engineering or related subject. The PhD is designed to investigate the manufacture of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), for defence applications, via the polymer impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP) route. The work will involve modifying specific polymers that are known to yield ceramic materials after pyrolysis in order to control the resulting final properties of the ceramic, then impregnating the modified polymers into ceramic fibre preforms (probably multiple times) and completing the pyrolysis stage. The properties of the resulting CMCs will then need extensive characterisation. There may well be a need for multiple iterations of the process.
