The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.
We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.
Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.
The role
An exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow in the School of Veterinary Medicine. The Veterinary Health Innovation Engine is a cross disciplinary entity dedicated to generation of data and then taking such data, turning it into information and thereby developing tools, approaches and devices to improve animal health. It is based in the School of Veterinary Medicine and collaborates extensively with the School of Biosciences. There has been a significant development in measurement technologies applied to human medicine research and diagnostic tool generation. We are applying these same approaches into veterinary medicine. Thus, much of the platform development work has been achieved in our lab and the labs of others.
The postdoctoral fellowship aims to build and expand our proteomics and informatics capability, primarily focused on improving human and veterinary health. The job holder will contribute to the team’s mission by using advanced analytical techniques to define the relative levels of key biomarkers in the blood samples from companion animals and livestock. The post will involve developing assays for nucleic acids (e.g. miRNA) and mass spectrometry-based techniques. You will analyse protein levels and biomarkers using ELISA, LC-MS, and bioinformatics tools (training provided) and optimise sample preparation SOPs for omics techniques.
The post holder will be involved in publish research, attend conferences, and contribute to grant writing. You will collaborate with colleagues, manage research activities, and mentor students or junior staff.
About you
The successful candidate will have a PhD in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry or equivalent relevant experience in mass spectrometry/proteomics with hands-on experience in the handling and usage of mass spectrometer(s) and analysing data emanating from a mass spectrometer in omics platforms, including statistical analysis of such data.
Experience in writing research reports and papers and good IT, organisational and administrative skills is desirable.
