Research Associate

Salary: As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is Grade 6, salary £34,866.

Contract Type: Fixed Term contract up to August 2026

The role of the post holder is to support ongoing clinical research projects within the Translational Brain Sciences group portfolio, which will involve the collection/handling/processing of samples from human participants (self-collected). This role will involve the identification and recruitment of appropriate patients in a variety of clinic settings (and on occasion healthy volunteers), obtaining informed consent, sample collection, handling and processing (according to project protocols and Standard Operating Procedures) and completion of the necessary records and electronic tracking logs.

Main Duties

• Identification of eligible participants for projects/trials using different sources of information. The post holder will then be required to obtain informed consent, to supply the relevant information, and to have sufficient knowledge of the research project to be able to answer any questions arising from the initial interview. They will be expected to work according to the requirements of Research Governance Framework, to Caldecott Principles, and in a manner compliant with the Human Tissue Act 2004
• Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as database management, scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews
• Analyse research data as directed
• Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
• Develop or adapt techniques, models and methods
• Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research
• Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
• Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research, for example organising participant visits, inputting data onto case report forms, data quality checking
• Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture

Person Specification

• Experience of working within a regulated quality controlled biomedical and clinical environment 
• Experience of patient facing roles and understanding of informed consent 
• Experience of NHS data systems and data management
• Degree or equivalent experience in relevant subject area 
• Practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques
• Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively
• Ability to access and organise resources successfully
• Knowledge of human tissue act and good clinical practice
• Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
