About the role

The UCL Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE) is looking to appoint a number of well-qualified and effective teachers for our Standard Pre-sessional programme, either online or face-to-face. Our BALEAP-accredited Programme is well-organised, high-quality and rewarding to teach on. Students taking these courses are UCL offer holders preparing for postgraduate and undergraduate entry into a range of disciplines. They are aiming for one of five language levels equivalent to IELTS 6.5 to 8.

As an Associate Lecturer, you will plan and deliver effective and engaging English for Academic Purposes (EAP) lessons which develop students’ academic skills and language. You will provide up to 21 contact hours per week within a 36.5 hours per week full-time contract. Teaching is either completely face-to-face on campus or completely online, but please note that all tutorials and assessments are conducted online.

About the contract

We offer a 10-week contract from 23 June - 29 August 2025. As a guide, the contract includes:

  • 1 week of comprehensive induction on UCL’s Bloomsbury campus
  • 6 weeks of teaching in total on the Standard Pre-sessional course
  • Up to 3 weeks for formative and summative assessment marking and writing reports at the end of the course.

You will be on an open-ended contract at UCL, meaning that you would not need to reapply to work in subsequent years, subject to availability and at the discretion of the Head of Pre-sessional Programmes.

Please note, those teaching on our online course will be required to attend the induction onsite in London but are not required to be onsite for the remainder of the course. They must however be based in the UK for the duration of the course. Unfortunately, no campus accommodation is available for these posts.

In addition to the salary, teachers will also receive pay for accrued leave at the end of the contract. Please note, leave cannot be taken during the Pre-sessional course unless in exceptional circumstances and with prior agreement. Any leave taken is deducted from the final accrued leave total.

Candidates must be available full-time and for the entire duration of the course.

Candidates must have the right to live and work in the UK.

About you

The ideal candidate will be an effective teacher, with a proven track record of excellent teaching. You will have significant English Language Teaching (ELT) or EAP experience and ideally have previous Pre-sessional experience. You should have a keen interest in and awareness of the needs of international students, and ideally have knowledge of the demands of research and autonomous learning within the context of a UK university. You must be able to deal with teaching on an intensive course, have the ability to balance competing pressures and meet deadlines. You should be able to work with minimal supervision, and be proficient in using digital devices and tools including Microsoft Teams, Word and PowerPoint.

Please take particular note of the minimum qualifications for this post. You must hold a first degree in any field, and one of the following combinations:

  • an external mouse and keyboard
  • a wired ethernet connection
  • a computer with an i7 / M1 or equivalent processor and 16GB RAM
  • broadband internet with 100 MB/s download and 20MB/s upload speeds

Please note that candidates who have previously applied but have not been successful will only be considered if they can demonstrate significant development on their previous application i.e. increased knowledge, additional qualifications and/or more relevant teaching experience.
