Ad Astra Fellow - Assistant Professor of Land Use and Wildlife Health

Applications are sought for Ad Astra Fellow - Assistant Professor of Land Use and Wildlife Health within the College of Health and Agricultural Sciences.

Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Professor of Land Use and Wildlife Health in the UCD School of Agriculture & Food Science. The School focuses on sustainable food production and environmental health, aligned with the UCD priority areas of One Health, sustainability, and research for public policy. The appointee will have expertise in the ecology, management and conservation of wildlife, the interactions of wildlife with land uses, and biodiversity in One Health. Here, wildlife and biodiversity refer to all free-living vertebrates and invertebrates that are associated with productive land uses including agriculture and forestry. The appointee will support research and teaching within the School. They will be expected to establish a close working relationship with natural and social sciences colleagues in UCD, as well as external research agencies and state bodies.

We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated candidates who have demonstrated internationally competitive research potential in relevant areas as well as commitment and a passion for teaching. Candidates must have an honours undergraduate degree and a PhD in zoology, ecology, agri-environmental sciences or another relevant area, teaching experience, a demonstrated capacity to carry out research, as well as excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills. The appointee will complement and engage actively with current academic staff in the Section, School and wider UCD community, and make a significant contribution to university life.

The main duties/responsibilities shall include:

  • Contribution to the School’s existing education programmes, including Wildlife Conservation and Management, Agri-Environmental Science, and Forestry at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
  • Contribution to the development of new education programmes.
  • Delivering theoretical, practical and field teaching in the areas of land use and wildlife health, incorporating state-of-the-art research techniques and results.
  • Developing and sustaining an internationally recognised research programme that leads to publications, innovation and impact. This research programme will be in line with the strategic research objectives of the School and the University.
  • Supervising and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students, and early stage researchers.
  • Competing for national and international research funding
  • Developing close collaborations with national and international agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Disseminating the results of research through appropriate academic and social media channels.
  • Contributing to the academic and administrative duties of the Section, School, College and University.
  • Representing UCD both nationally and internationally in the specific areas of the appointee’s expertise.
  • Contributing to national policy relating to land use, wildlife, biodiversity and One Health, when appropriate.
  • Engaging in appropriate training and professional career development activities.

95 Lecturer/Asst Professor Above the Bar (7943) Salary Scale: €62,855 - €99,533 Per Annum

Appointment will be made on scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines.
