The UCD School of Earth Sciences seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in the area of hydrogeology and water resources to broaden its Earth systems research, enhance its teaching programmes, and extend its transdisciplinary reach. The appointment is linked to UCD’s new 2025 ‘Breaking Boundaries’ strategy and the university’s commitment to promoting high-impact, cross-cutting research in Sustainability.
We invite applications from geoscientists with proven expertise in groundwater research including, but not limited to: subsurface flow, numerical groundwater flow modelling, interchange between surface water and groundwater, fractured and karstified aquifers, groundwater chemistry and contamination, climate change impacts, and challenges around shallow groundwater and urbanisation.
The successful applicant will have an excellent peer-reviewed publication output (commensurate with career stage and path) and a track record of research funding. They will be expected to build a research team with an international profile and to supervise MSc and PhD students. They will collaborate with both faculty in the School of Earth Sciences (for example on geothermal energy demonstration projects and subsurface CO2 storage) and work more widely under the ‘connected water’ theme with other UCD water researchers e.g. those based in the schools of Civil Engineering, Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering, Biology and Environmental Science, Agriculture and Food Science, and Business.
The candidate appointed to the position will be an enthusiastic and engaging university teacher and will develop new modules and content in practical and applied hydrogeology for the School’s BSc in Earth Sciences and its taught-graduate programme(s). They will also contribute to the BSc in Sustainability (both classroom modules and project supervision) and to other teaching outside of the School, and engage with industry and as part of UCD’s commitment to ‘learning for life’. The school values field work and the ability to develop and lead field-based training will be important.
The UCD School of Earth Sciences (https://www.ucd.ie/earthsciences/) is the largest geoscience school in Ireland and one of 7 schools in the UCD College of Science. The School hosts the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG), a Research Ireland centre involving all the Irish geoscience institutions (https://www.icrag-centre.org), as well as the National Centre for Isotope Geochemistry at UCD, a world-class analytical facility. High-end dedicated computational resources are also available in the School. Our research is focussed on current societal challenges including the energy transition, environmental change, geohazards, carbon management, and access to raw materials.
The School and UCD value diversity amongst their faculty and are committed to creating an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated, and everyone is afforded equality of opportunity.
