The Department of Film Studies seeks to make two appointments at Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Film Studies. We are especially interested in candidates whose expertise intersects with the following research areas: in particular cinemas of South Asia; also cinemas of the Global South (Latin America, Middle East, and Africa), New Media theory, Television (media) history, Documentary, Artists’ moving image, and Film/Media Practice as Research. We seek applicants who will consolidate and/or complement the existing methodological approaches to these areas of research (theoretical, historical and archival) of the department.

Film Studies is distinctive in its commitment to interdisciplinarity, and the position requires teaching across a broad range of areas. Indicatively, the new posts will lead or contribute to teaching compulsory modules, including Introduction to Film Studies; Critical Debates; Research and Scholarship; Film History and Film Theory modules; Film and New Media (BA level); and Formations of Film Studies, and London Film Cultures (MA level).

The post is an open-ended position with a probation period, which is usually three years. This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. PhD awarded in Film Studies or Film/Media Practice as Research or a relevant interdisciplinary field (for Grade 6, awarded or close to award)
  2. Clearly defined research interests and plans compatible with the research strategies of the Department, Faculty and College, including (Grade 6) establishing a track record of high-quality publications (Grade 7 & 8) having a track record of high-quality publications, grant income and public engagement
  3. Experience of teaching relevant subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with evidence of the potential for innovative and effective teaching to small and large groups, in person and online, and the ability to engage and inspire students of diverse and international backgrounds
  4. Excellent knowledge and understanding of a relevant field of expertise relating to cinemas of South Asian cinema, cinemas of the Global South and New Media theory, Television (media) history, Artists’ moving image, and Creative Practice as Research
  5. Commitment to student learning and welfare, including providing academic advice, assessment feedback, and pastoral support (e.g. as personal tutor)
  6. Experience of curriculum development (Grade 7 & 8)
  7. Experience and skills in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy development and practice, inspiring sustainable cultural change (Grade 8)
