St. John’s College invite applications for a fixed-term College Lectureship in modern English Literature, covering the period 1760 to the present day. The appointment is available for the period 1st October 2025 – 30th September 2026. This is a temporary, fixed-term position and will therefore not be extended or renewed.
St John’s College has three Official Fellows in English: Professor Patrick Hayes, Professor Noël Sugimura, and Professor Gareth Evans; it is also home to the Drue Heinz Chair in American Literature, Professor Lloyd Pratt. This appointment is to cover Professor Hayes’s sabbatical leave.
St John’s has an excellent record of results in both Prelims (the first year of the degree) and the Final Honour School (FHS, the final part of the degree) from undergraduates who arrive at College from diverse backgrounds. Each year we admit around eight undergraduate students, normally comprised seven single Honours and either one or two joint schools with modern languages. Our students are mainly taught in College, the exception being FHS Paper 6 (a special option), which is run by the Faculty. Where needed, specialist supervision outside of College is occasionally arranged for undergraduate FHS dissertations.

The salary will be 1.0FTE of point 1 of the University scale, grade 7, currently £36,924 p.a. plus a pensionable £1,500 per annum Oxford University Weighting payment which will be paid in equal monthly instalments and pro-rated for part time appointments. The appointee will automatically be enrolled in the Universities Superannuation Scheme. Further details can be found here - USS.
The appointee may have paid by College, or reclaim, teaching and research expenses of up to £1,500 p.a. during the course of their appointment, subject to approval in advance by the Senior Tutor. There is an entertainment allowance of £358 p.a. The post will carry some SCR dining privileges, subject to availability. A teaching room, which may be shared, may be provided, subject to availability.
