Job description:

Due to our recent success in winning a Leverhulme Research Project grant at the University of Sheffield, we are seeking to appoint a two-year Research Associate (PRDA) in Japanese Cinema/Film and Media Practice.

This Woman’s Screen Work?: Creativity, Care and Gender in Asian Film, captures and examines the experiences of women working in the Japanese Screen Industries. Exploring the careers of both above-the-line (directors, producers, screenwriters etc.) and below-the-line (sound, design, hair and make-up etc.) workers, the wider project will explore the contemporary lives and experiences of those working in the Asian Screen Industries and how they navigate both local and global film structures and networks.

This candidate will have evidenced filmmaking/creative practice background alongside area studies knowledge. Japanese language ability will be a requirement as the aim of this role is to aid the Principal Investigator (PI) and the project team in collecting and recording both locally-based interviews in Japan and online activities (as needed). You will work with PI, CoIs and local researchers to create the research film. This post will require frequent travel to Asia and the ability to work independently.

The project team will follow the principle that authors appear in alphabetical order on all co-authored publications and the Research Associate will co-author at least one journal article, co-author the 60 min research film, and be a named collaborator on the collected edition book.

You will have a PhD (or equivalent and please contact the PI as we are open to people from diverse background experience) in a relevant field(s), a developing research profile, and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, and will contribute actively to the project activities.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
