Under the guidance of a Senior Engineering Lead, working within a highly supportive and collaborative team, you will be jointly responsible for designing, building, operating and supporting the University Data Network, including Access Networks in departments and colleges, and the Data Centre Network.

The team undertakes a broad spectrum of activities. Main responsibilities and duties include:

  • The design and development of various interconnected multi-vendor network systems.
  • Investigating and resolving issues, if escalated by first- and second-line teams.
  • Keeping your technical skills relevant and up to date and help colleagues develop their skills through knowledge exchange, specialist advice and consultancy.

You will have the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable experience of working in a dynamic IT environment
  • Basic networking technologies and concepts, such as Ethernet, VLANs, TCP/IP, DHCP, and DNS
  • Evidence of managing technical activities and tasks assigned
  • Expert knowledge of networking and network administration
  • Strong ability to build relationships at all levels of the organisation
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

It would be useful if you have the following:

  • Evidence of working at an operational level to deliver core technologies, such as Cisco Catalyst, Aruba AOS-CX and Fortinet systems
  • Evidence of developing and applying an understanding of a new technology to deliver business results
  • Evidence of effectively sharing technical knowledge and skills to support the outputs and learning of colleagues and users
  • Strong planning skills

To be considered for the senior position, it is essential that you can also evidence experience of delivering complex networking projects, specifically in the operation and troubleshooting of layer 2 and 3 protocols, such as Ethernet, VLANs, TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS and dynamic routing protocols such as OSPF or BGP.

The team have many exciting projects over the coming years, such as making use of software defined networks and dynamic Network Access Control (NAC).

This role offers exposure to enterprise-level network technologies at scale, as such you will be at the forefront of shaping the University's network.  Investment in our staff is key; you will be offered ample training and learning opportunities and personal development is highly encouraged.

You should have either a degree level qualification, a Level 6 vocational qualification, industry standard certification or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience. We understand not everyone will meet these criteria or have the other skills and experience listed. Plenty of support and instruction will be provided so you are strongly encouraged to apply regardless of meeting all criteria.

The position is based at the UIS West Cambridge Site and supports hybrid working, although you will often need to visit on site to configure or troubleshoot issues. Core hours are 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday, this can be reasonably adjusted depending on your needs.
