University of Cambridge Information Services (UIS) is creating a new Network Operations team and is offering an exciting opportunity for an on-site Network Operations Manager to join us.

Under the guidance of the Infrastructure Operations Manager (Networks), you will play a critical role in supporting the network environments within the University, including:

  • The University Data Network, the main backbone network.
  • Access networks in departments and colleges.
  • The University's internet connections to its ISP, Janet.
  • The University Wireless Service.
  • The Data Centre Network located in multiple sites.
  • The University DDI (DNS, DHCP and IP Address Management) system.

As the lead, you will provide technical support and manage a team of Network Operations technicians, initially two but expected to grow. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and supporting network monitoring and maintenance systems to ensure the smooth operation of the networks.
  • Responding quickly and efficiently to network outages, participating in on-site remediation, and maintaining good communication with customers and colleagues.
  • Handling incidents raised by customers, providing second/third line support for tickets escalated to the network team.
  • Implementing standard service customer requests, such as creating new logical networks or updating system configurations.
  • Developing, maintaining and ensuring support documentation and processes are followed, updated, and shared throughout the team.
  • Developing and mentoring your team of technicians, providing guidance and support as needed.

We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:

  • Recent experience in managing technical teams and delivering quality results in IT Operations.
  • Ability to share technical knowledge and skills for training and developing colleagues.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals, including routing, switching, firewalls, DNS, DHCP, wired and wireless connectivity, and how they interact with attached systems.
  • Experience of troubleshooting problems with networks and attached systems.
  • Experience of network monitoring and administration.
  • Track record of developing IT operations policy, strategy, and practice.
  • Ability to build relationships with colleagues and customers at all levels of the organisation and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

You should have either a degree, Level 7 vocational qualification, industry standard certification, or an equivalent level of experience.

Desirable skills include effective project management and organisation.

As this role supports physical infrastructure operations, it is primarily on-site and will involve travel around the University based in Cambridge, UK. At least initially, the role holder will need to be involved in operational activities, although this is expected to reduce, as the team expands.
