The Role

As part of Maynooth University’s strategic development, the Department of Computer Science is seeking three excellent academics to join our staff as an Assistant Professor / Lecturer or Assistant Lecturer in Computer Science. Applicants should be strongly rooted in Computer Science, have internationally recognised expertise in their field and pursue research at the forefront of their topic. The appointees will be full faculty members, and as such will be expected to innovate in both research and teaching, to assist in the administration and mission of the Department, and to contribute to the wider research community. 

Applications are encouraged from candidates who will lead and collaborate in teaching and research areas which include, but are not limited to: 

  • Intelligent Systems  
  • Cybersecurity 
  • Trustworthy Computing 
  • Theory of Computation 
  • DNA Computing 
  • Emerging Computer Science  

The appointed candidates will be excellent researchers and teachers with clear potential for research leadership and have a proven record of teaching, research and publication, appropriate to career stage. They will have a strong commitment to research-led undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a demonstrated capacity/potential to attract research funding and develop a world-class research programme.  

The appointees will be expected to build a strong research profile that supports the University’s research strategy, including affiliating to the Research Institutes, where appropriate, and working with colleagues on national and international research. The appointees will be expected to sustain and conduct research, engage in scholarship of quality and substance, and generate publications of international standard. They should have a strong commitment to research-led undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a demonstrated capacity/potential to attract research funding and develop a world-class research programme. The successful candidates will be expected to supervise Masters and PhD students. 

The ideal candidate will have: 

Essential 

  • A PhD in Computer Science or a related discipline; 
  • A strong academic record in teaching and research; 
  • A proven record in research publication, supervision, and an ability to contribute to future research leadership in Maynooth University; 
  • Evidence of a sustained record of scholarly work and publication of international quality, demonstrating potential to become a significant contributor in their field; 
  • Evidence that they follow/understand open science FAIR principles for the reproducibility of their research; 
  • Participation in research conferences and seminars; 
  • Experience of, and commitment to, working in an interdisciplinary setting; 
  • Ability to engage in research collaboration with industry and across disciplines; 
  • Clear potential to secure competitive research funding; 
  • Ability to provide core lectures and practical classes in Computer Science to undergraduate and postgraduate students; 
  • Experience of and a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, programme development and academic innovation; 
  • Excellent communication, administrative, organisational, teamwork and interpersonal skills; 
  • Experience supervising graduate research students; 
  • Experience of developing new modules and teaching material; 
  • Career driven, enthusiastic and highly motivated; 
  • Willingness to contribute to the Discipline, Department and the wider community; 
  • Ability to take the initiative; 
  • A commitment to their own professional development; 
  • Strong leadership skills.
